The story

This painting presents a cluster of traditional symbols of marital love: loose hair (the hairstyle of Venetian women on their wedding day), the little sleeping dog (symbol of fidelity) and, in the background, the myrtle in a pot (evergreen plant, symbol of constancy) and the two wedding chests. Hidden for many years, deemed obscene in the 19th century, Titian’s painting is now considered as one of the masterpieces of the Uffizi Gallery and is certainly one of the most copied paintings in the History.
