Picnic
in Paris
A limited edition of the legendary photograph ‘Pic Nic Allée” by Massimo Vitali printed on 90x70cm Royal Consort Paper in 2006.
Picnic in Paris
Pic Nic Allee (2000)
Offset Photolitograph (90x70 cm) from A
Portfolio of Landscapes and Figures printed
on Royal Consort Paper by Steidl Verlag for
Brancolini Grimaldi, Florence, 2006
Limited Edition : No. 74 (120 copies),
numbered and credited in ink artist's credit
stamp on verso.
Historic photo taken on July 14, 2000 in the
Luxembourg garden, Paris during the giant
picnic celebrating the French national
holiday and the 21st century.
Is it because his camera was stolen from his
car, leaving him with only his
untransportable 8x10 camera, that the
legendary Italian artist only photographs
monumental surfaces perched 9 meters
high?
Vitali began his work in '94 and persists in
capturing the world he describes as a stage,
"We are our own spectacle, a herd".
Influenced by Andreas Gursky, Vitali's
gigantic formats demonstrate individuality in
the mass. In his 30-year career, he took just
2,200 photos (only 70 a year!), which he never
retouched.
Exhibited all over the world, Vitali's work is
included in the permanent collections of the
Guggenheim in New York and the Centre
Pompidou in Paris.
At the age of 80, the artist still works from his
home in Berlin.

holiday and the 21st century.
Is it because his camera was stolen from his
car, leaving him with only his
untransportable 8x10 camera, that the
legendary Italian artist only photographs
monumental surfaces perched 9 meters
high?
Vitali began his work in '94 and persists in
capturing the world he describes as a stage,
"We are our own spectacle, a herd".
Influenced by Andreas Gursky, Vitali's
gigantic formats demonstrate individuality in
the mass. In his 30-year career, he took just
2,200 photos (only 70 a year!), which he never
retouched.
Exhibited all over the world, Vitali's work is
included in the permanent collections of the
Guggenheim in New York and the Centre
Pompidou in Paris.
At the age of 80, the artist still works from his
home in Berlin.

Is it because his camera was stolen from his
car, leaving him with only his
untransportable 8x10 camera, that the
legendary Italian artist only photographs
monumental surfaces perched 9 meters
high?
Vitali began his work in '94 and persists in
capturing the world he describes as a stage,
"We are our own spectacle, a herd".
Influenced by Andreas Gursky, Vitali's

The story
On July 14, 2000, giant picnics are organized everywhere in France to celebrate the French national day and the 21st Century. Famous for his photographs of Italian beaches, Massimo Vitali installs his wooden chamber “Deardorff” on a seven meter high stand off the Luxembourg garden, Paris, to take what is certainly one of his most iconic photograph. This Offset Photolitograph, numbered 74 on 120, is part of the very rare Landscapes with Figures portfolio.
